Complacency kills

Nothing will ever beat the hunger you have for the gym the first time you touch the iron. The first time your muslces contract and blood begins to engorge the muscle and though everyone else your arms may look the same, you feel like they have ballooned to twice the size.

You feel every rep past that enjoyable pump feels like your skin is tearing and your arm is going to either pop or fall off. Yet you keep going, you feel amazing in both mind and body and want to push as hard as you can to grow and become more like that guy you saw on the front of a bodybuilding magazine wearing a gym vest and gym shorts which seemingly enhanced his physique and made his muscles pop more and those veins look like a 3D road map.

Shortly after this time, just training is not enough, you begin to purchase the latest supplements with label claims and athlete endorsements as well as purchasing the same gym shorts and vests in the hope that it will make you look more like your idol as that is what he or she supplements with and wears too.

Each workout is delivered with razor focus, you are jotting down your workout of German volume 5x5 training in a desperate attempt to get stronger with each week, feeling on weeks that you are not stronger, that you are simply not progressing, you could have the best workout ever but then all it would take is for you to moss out on your Max deadlifft by a few kg and you would feel defeated.

You begin to question why you proud not lift it and then want to push even harder by compensating with extra reps, extra sets, extra anything just to make up for those few kg.
Bodybuilding however is a marathon and not a sprint so as months pass you by and those initial noob gains begin to slow down and stop, it is easy for most people to loose sight of why we do this, why we sacrifice endorphin filled Meals and snacks for chicken and rice, why we sacrifice drinking alcohol on a weekend up town with your friends to staying in with a protein shake instead.

For those that are not training for a competition or an end goal, it can be difficult to stay focused and stay driven when these thoughts begun to set in. This is when some people think 'screw it' and trade in the gym shorts and vests for a shirt and jeans and begin to overcompensate for lost time by partying a lot instead.

Though if you are not training for a set goal or competition it is healthy for you to have a balance so that mentally and physically you get the benefits of training without sacrificing too much.

Even with a balance such as this, it is still possible to train hard when you are in the gym and to eat right most of the time but then have your down time when required and still get good results. It is when people become complacent and start just 'going through the motions' that their physiques become stagnant and they struggle to progress more. We all know someone who does this, you see them in the gym but they seem to spend more time on their phones and talking to other people rather than training and when they do a set it is light and of low intensity.

The problem with this is that your body doesn't like to gain muscle, it does so as a defence mechanism so when you lift a weight it stresses the muscle targeted (and other secondary muscles also) and causes micro tears as the muscle tries to balance out the load and deal with the stress. Then as a defence mechanism because your body does not like this sort of stress to happen, your body then repairs this muscle but bigger than before so the next time the same pressure/weight is applied to the muscle, that your muscle can deal with the pressure better. So if you are just doing a few light sets you will be able to maintain the muscle gained but not really simulate new muscle growth as after a while your body will adapt and begin to be able to deal with the pressure that you are applying.

A lot of people even find low cut stringer gym vests and short gym shorts to help them maintain focus and intensity at the gym as this sort of gym clothing allows the person wearing them to see the muscle getting stimulated as it is been worked in the gym, as they work harder and force more blood into the targeted muscles the muscles become engorged with blood and slightly inflamed. Also seeing the muscle been worked and where your peak contraction is can also help your workout, for this reason short gym shorts are especially liked when doing leg extensions and stringer gym vests used when doing cable chest fly's.  Www.bigredapparel.co.uk have a wide range of gym shorts and vests available at some of tge lowest prices you will find anywhere whilst still maintaining a very high quality and offer very fast shipping which is free to anyone in the UK and worldwide delivery is available from just £1.99 meaning ordering gym clothing has never been more affordable and convenient.

Gym Fit Dad Posted by Gym Fit Dad

I am a modern day superhero (in the eyes of my child) who likes to lift heavy and enjoy life, please read my blog as I take you into my mind as I try to keep the scales of life balanced between been a fun dad and fiancee whilst still not looking out of place whilst wearing gym shorts and vests. Doing so means that I often have to measure body fat allover my body using a skinfold caliper to keep my mind at bay as I fear sometimes if I am not going forward, i am going backwards.
