Gym Fit Dad

Gym Fit Dad

I am a modern day superhero (in the eyes of my child) who likes to lift heavy and enjoy life, please read my blog as I take you into my mind as I try to keep the scales of life balanced between been a fun dad and fiancee whilst still not looking out of place whilst wearing gym shorts and vests. Doing so means that I often have to measure body fat allover my body using a skinfold caliper to keep my mind at bay as I fear sometimes if I am not going forward, i am going backwards.

My pet likes
Normally we call it pet hates however I wanted today to talk about pet likes. I was asked by big Red Apparel to talk about something other than gym clothes in my most recent blog, instead of talking about the latest fat calipers and gym shorts today I get to talk about my other hobby besides bodybuilding. A vet little known fact, but something so many people love when they find out is that I am a keen reptile enthusiast and hobbiest.    I currently have a spare bedroom in my house that I use to home several really useful boxes (rubs) and vivaruims. At the moment I use these to ..

Once In a Lifetime
No matter what you do in life, no matter what you like or dislike, their will always be one memorable feat that will never be repeated. on the 9th July 2016 in the bodybuilding/powerlifting world we saw just that, a feat that i genuinely do not believe will ever be beaten. Eddie Hall deadlifted 500kg yes that is right five hundred kilos. At the first direct arena in Leeds, West Yorkshire, Eddie Hall deadlifted one thousand one hundred pounds. Thus beating his 2015 world record of 462kg by 38kg, that is almost a plate (20kg) per side! in just one year to be able to lift this much more is just i..

In Sickness And In Health
As I write this, I sit here i am coming off the back of 5 days of been foggy minded, groggy, sick and with no appetite. It is only when things like this happen to me and I am ill of health, that I begin to appreciate been in good health. When the  sickness hits I become more conscious about the amount of fluid that I take in and the religious intake of vitamins and minerals that I take in however a few days later this ‘new found respect’ for health begins to slip away again.    The diet of a sick person is far easier than someone an eager fitness person or bodybuilder who ..

Complacency kills
Nothing will ever beat the hunger you have for the gym the first time you touch the iron. The first time your muslces contract and blood begins to engorge the muscle and though everyone else your arms may look the same, you feel like they have ballooned to twice the size.  You feel every rep past that enjoyable pump feels like your skin is tearing and your arm is going to either pop or fall off. Yet you keep going, you feel amazing in both mind and body and want to push as hard as you can to grow and become more like that guy you saw on the front of a bodybuilding magazine wearing a ..

Remember What Works
We are all individuals, we have different goals, different lifestyles, different mentalities, different goals, different dreams. With all of these differences in the equation, we can not expect something that works for a celebrity, IFBB pro or even a friend to work the same for you as it does for them.   Even something like a pre workout formulation, you may take one particular brand and you may swear by it however it may not provide the same effects to your friend, or it may simply not agree with your friend. Because of this, what I would say from my years of experience, living and..

Health And Fitness
With the first week of spring upon us, it was only a matter of time before the traditional flu symptoms begun setting in. This year however it hit me harder than ever, unfortunately for me, like most of my friends, I do not really appreciate my health until I am without it. It is only when I am unhealthy that I begin taking in the right amount of liquids and also taking multi vitamins, when it is already too late.   The flu I had this year was the worst I have ever had it though, i spent days and nights in bed sweating and shivering at the same time, sleeping in gym shorts and a gym..

knowledge is power
When I started training, I was not the strongest person. Infact I was in for a rather large shock when I first stepped into a proper gym. The first gym I went to for the first month into my experience, they only had machines and dumbbells upto 10kg and as any of you guys and girls will know, when you are using machines instead of free weights, it is a totally different experiance. It is as if comparing swimming shorts to running shorts. Though the 2 items are still shorts, the way they look, perform and function are totally differant. On a free weight you may be only able to do a fifth or..

Hi, my names GymFitDad and I’m an addict… part 1
Though my life, I have had many hobbies and interests ranging from petrol RC cars to camping, all of these hobbies and interests to date have been something I have enjoyed massively at one stage or another in my life however over time, I have afforded less and less time for them and eventually given up completely when either something else came along or I simply lost interest.   Fitness for me however has been a total game changer, from the first day that I went to the not so local community centre gym to begin lifting weights with my friend Darren, I was addicted. The walk to this ..
Why I love fitness
Fitness and health has never been so popular, in recent years we have quickly transitioned from been the social outcasts and referred to as ‘picky eaters’ and ‘health crazed’ to the ‘new normal’ nowadays most restaurants show the calorie content of everything from their pepperoni pizza to the house red, everything is quantified so that even when people ‘cheat’ on their diet they can do so in a calculated way. Maybe even an IIFYM (if it fits your macros) style diet?   What used to be such a niche market is now embraced by almost every high street store and supermarket, I think you wo..

Mail Order
Mail order to most people is just the norm, you order something online then it turns up at your house a few days later via courier or local postal service.  Most people do not think beyond this however when you look into it further, at least in my opinion it is very very interesting. You can order just about anything online from live animals to electronics, all expertly packed and handled to arrive in the correct state. Most of these items you wouldn't ever dream of seeing in your local stores in town yet you are suddenly overrun with options all within just one Google search. A wide v..

Like Dorothy said their is no place like home. I trialled a gym out (won't mention the name) and had to pay a month upfront in advance, it was a budget gym so could not look around before as it was unmanned.  When I entered the gym, the first thing that really hit me was the amount of cardio equipment.    I spoke to a few people who had trained at similar gyms in the town centre and they all mentioned that the city centre gyms were pretty much the same with only one or two slight variations.    The gym I go to usually, though it does have a lot of cardio eq..

I'll start on Monday
In this industry, the most common saying has to be 'I'll start in Monday' this includes both exercise and diet. So many people I know that come to me wanting help and advice on supplements and training end the conversation with 'thanks for that, I can't wait to start on Monday' their is no better time to begin than now.    Fitness is a marathon and not a sprint so those extra few days that you want to keep eating junk foods and wear your comfy gym clothes and gym shorts to lounge about the house as opposed to wearing them in the gym could be the difference between a pound or tw..

new years gym resolutions parts 2
As I thought, the gym was really busy today. However It was a good thing, the gym was full of people willing to help each other out with no barriers between people. This is what I have always loved about going to any gym (at least most of them), people have a common interest in improving themselves, people appreciate that most of the time, people do not hold themselves in his esteem and as such their is no negative vibes, feelings or actions. People simply want to help each other not only achieve their goals but also have fun on the way.   I believe this is one of the main reasons w..
New year's resolution gym
After your mountain of mince pies, bucks fizz and Christmas turkey. The world's most popular post Christmas new years resolution is fitness related. Sometimes this will be in the form of weight loss, muscle gain but sometimes it can be just to eat healthier and stop binging on certain items.    All of this leads to people to start purchasing items in the sales, mainly gym clothing/ sportswear and accessories either to entice them to utilise these items of clothing through exercise now they have made the financial commitment or they purchase 1-2 sizes smaller or larger (dependan..

motivation
After a long day at work, sometimes the last thing I want to do is go to the gym. Instead of getting into the car and stopping at the gym I sometimes have the urge to go straight home.    I think it's human nature that when you start to have a doubt in your mind, you begin to pile up reasons to support this negativity leading true to the saying that 'if you want to fail, you will find an excuse. If you want to succeed you will find a way'.   I often find myself thinking about why I do this, surely it would be easier to stay in bed a little later each morning ins..
