Eat more to lose weight. Yes, you heard me and no I’m not going crazy. So listen up and hear me out please, after that you can scream at me if you like. Firstly, let’s talk about exciting things like calories, macro tracking, metabolism and hormone regulation.
Our body is a glorified engine (only we look much better in gym shorts and other sportswear/workout clothes), compare us to your average automobile if you must- it’s not going to run without diesel or petrol is it? So why would you expect your body to. Likewise, you overfill an engine and it’s going to seep right out. Just like your body, only the excess spills out in layers out unattractive fat hanging out over that stringer.
However, our body is a little more complex, undereating- being in a constant calorie deficit and eliminating certain food groups, results in your body holding onto what fuel you do provide it with. In fact it holds onto fat which you do have stored and starts using muscle as fuel, a big reason why you see lots of ‘skinny-fat’ people. You know those stick thin guys and gals but they never really look toned or of low bodyfat, if they took care of their metabolism and general nutrition they would be killing those gym shorts.
Not alone do we get that ‘skinny-fat’ look but eating away at your muscle has devastating effects on the body, one major one being metabolism damage because the more muscle we have the more calories we burn at rest. Undereating can and does result in long-term harm to your metabolism which is essentially responsible for your ability to burn calories, fat and so on. Never mind the fact that undereating makes us unhappy madams, HANGRY, irritably and moody, which has overwhelming effects on our cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone responsible for the storage of visceral fat cells .
So holding all the above in mind I have a few words of wisdom for those of you searching for the beach body, hidden abs or even if you just want to look better in your favourite brand of sportswear.
Firstly and most importantly NEVER EVER skip breakfast. Yes yes, just like mammy told you years ago, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Pack it up with protein rich foods to regulate insulin levels are curve sugar cravings immediately. Another never ever is; do not and I repeat do not cut fats from your body, if you want your body running like a Lamborghini fats are fundamental. Fat in your diet sets the stage for an optimal fat-loss environment, meaning you don’t have to hide under the big gym hoodie and you can in fact embrace some cutie workout clothes.
Once you’ve begun the day right and you’re not starving with the hungry (clearly making you happier already…or maybe that’s just me, food is the way to my heart. Feed Sarah equals happy Sarah) you need to eat every two to three hours, keep that metabolism ticking over and avoiding poor food. I’m not telling you to tie yourself to the cooker at all just in case you’re thinking ‘get lost Sarah I don’t have time for that’, I’m simply saying, grab some fruit or even some tuna and crackers.
Now you’ve had your snack isn’t it time to eat again. Yup you heard me right, lunch is calling your name about three hours after that last snack and don’t forget hydration is key. Give those damn muscles some water. So now you’ll have had two main meals and two snacks, with another one to follow after lunch. And yes you guessed right it’s not over yet, we are not going to stop eating at six or seven o’clock, what are you trying to do? Go into starvation mode, twelve hours without food overnight, I’d rather eat my socks.
Bedtime- if you ever think I’m going to go to bed hungry you’re a bad person. For goodness sake how would you expect me to sleep without my carbs? Get a grip this is real life. Just in case you’re getting some mad idea that this means you can have your cookies and hot chocolate wrapped up under the blanket, you’re wrong, step away from the biscuit barrel instantly. Get your wholegrains and protein into you. Do a Sarah on it and grab some proats- protein oats.
So let’s just have a little think here, so far we have;
- Breakfast Munch
- Lunch Munch
- Dinner Munch
- Bedtime Munch
And if you ever ever feel hungry grab yourself a pint of water, wait ten minutes, if your still starving have another snack but your choices better be right because those hips don’t lie. But I really dislike seeing Hangry B*TCHES so please eat (I’ve been known to eat more calories than the average man in my life on a daily bases. PROUD. Easily known my workout clothes and sportswear wardrobe is ever expanding).
Now that we have established that in order to maintain a healthy happy metabolism we must eat frequent, every two to three hours to be precise, lets discuss how to make appropriate food choices that will compliment those big booty gym leggings you want to squeeze into. Everyone’s diet is different, there is no one size fits all and don’t believe anyone who tells you any different. So straightaway decide your goals, get online and calculate your macros according to your aims (they will be significantly different for example if you are aiming to build muscle or burn fat). Macros are you ratio of carbs, fats and protein- begin tracking these in order to manage your diet. Believe me it works, I do it daily, it’s like my new religion. When your tracking your macros you should ensure that all meals are balanced, don’t have one meal of one thousand calories and another of four hundred, come on where is the common sense. Better nutrition means banging body in those workout clothes.
What are ye waiting for kids, stack up on the veg, grab those chicken fillets, and clear the shops of avocados and healthy fats. Time to eat big now that I’ve told you undereating is ruining your metabolism, eliminating food groups is lowering your ability to burn fats and fasting, well that’s just wrong on so many levels. Don’t be silly, don’t be hangry.
